Working now, best I can tell, this did it: 1) Empty the cache 2) Delete cookies and other site and plug-in data I also disabled "account syncing" for this instance of chrome, meaning that my browsing history and so on will not get synced to/from my Google account and to/from my other browsers. That might be part of the fix too, can't tell.
